Dear Parents,

Welcome to 2nd grade! Miss Leila and I are looking forward to a great year with your child.

We would like to invite you all to participate in the 2nd grade classroom this year. I believe that parent involvement and communication are vital to the educational process. There are many ways you can get involved. Throughout the year we will be asking for parent assistance with various learning activities and projects. In addition, we will need parent chaperones on field trips, helpers at parties, parent readers, and we welcome you to share special ethnic or religious celebrations with the class. (I will talk more about these opportunities at Back to School Night.)

The first few weeks of school will focus on establishing routines and clarifying expectations for the school year. Our math and reading curriculum will begin with a review of skills and concepts taught in first grade. Our first social studies unit will be “The Land around Us,” which includes an exploration of different land areas and map skills.

During the first two weeks we will be conducting basic assessments in math, reading, and spelling. These assessments help us discover any skills that may have been lost over the summer and allow us to provide more individualized instruction.

Back-to School Night has been scheduled for Wednesday, September 7, 7:00 – 8:00 PM. At this time I will address classroom volunteers, field trips, homework, and other frequently asked questions concerning 2nd grade. If you would like to discuss a specific issue or concern with me, I would be happy to schedule a time to meet with you individually.

Class Bulletin Board – we have a bulletin board in the classroom reserved for special photos of 2nd graders. Please help your child pick out a photo to bring in for our board. These photos can include other family members and/or pets. Please send in smaller photos or cropped photos if possible as we have limited board space. Write your child’s name on the name on the back of the photo. We will return all photos at the end of the school year.

Water Bottles – Please feel free to send water bottles to school with your child. They may keep the bottles on their desks (provided the bottles have a lid or seal). Water is important for the brain and helps reduce stress!

Room Temperature – In order to “beat the heat” on hot days we need to start the air conditioner in the morning. Some students sit closer to vents than others and get cold. I recommend that each child bring a jacket or sweater to school every day to put on if needed.

School Supplies

Please make sure that your child has all of the required school supplies for 2nd grade. To download a copy of the list, go to the 2nd grade page of the school website (kirkschool.org).

Emergency Preparedness/Earthquake Kit

Please remember to send an emergency form and earthquake kit to school for your child. To download a copy of the emergency form or find out what to include in your child’s earthquake kit go to http://kirkschool.org/forms/ and select the appropriate link.

If you have any questions you may reach me through the school office at (310) 344-1242 or by e-mail, grade2@kirkschool.org. (I check e-mail during work hours 8:00 – 4:30.)

Sincerely,

Pam Sellers
